When the 9/11 attacks took place twenty years ago, New York City was left devastated and shaken. Amid such tragedy, the return of baseball to the city sent a powerful and unifying message. Memories like Mike Piazza’s home run at Shea Stadium and the Yankees’ run to the World Series are central not only to baseball fans, but to all the New Yorkers who experienced that day’s horrors.
As baseball returned following the attacks, MLB had all teams wear an American flag patch on their hats. For the 20th anniversary of the attacks, we will be releasing a limited re-issue of the September 2001 Yankees and Mets on-field caps. To honor those that gave their lives on that day, a portion of all proceeds will be donated to Tunnel to Towers helping the first responders that helped bring baseball back to NYC.
